BBMP will push for road-widening
With the issue of widening of Sankey Road (T. Chowdaiah Road) coming up for hearing in the high court on Tuesday, BBMP will be filing an affidavit on its stand on the project by Monday, according to BBMP sources. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, authorities in the BBMP road-widening wing said the high court will be updated on the status of traffic density on T. Chowdaiah Road between Cauvery Junction and Yeshwantpur and the need for road-widening.
The BBMP will make its stand clear stating that traffic snarls are arising due to the bottleneck at Bhashyam Circle as the road narrows down to just 12 metres from 27 meters. Unless the road is widened at the cost of cutting trees the traffic won’t ease, the BBMP will argue. The plan to widen the road to 30 metres has been reduced to 27 metres to minimise the cutting of trees, added sources. Widening of the road has been proposed in the Revised Master Plan (RMP) 2015 formulated by BDA. The BBMP is only the implementing authority and work orders worth Rs 20 crore have been issued to four contractors.
The trees on Sankey Tank bund stretch have been auctioned and felled, except two trees. The high court has stayed the BBMP from axing them. BBMP will also tell the court that the road would be widened to 45 metres.

Tender process takes off for Okalipuram’s eight-lane corridor in Bangalore
Here’s some good news for the residents of Rajajinagar, Malleswaram and other parts of West Bangalore.
The long-pending eight-lane corridor project, connecting Okalipuram junction with Khoday Circle (Fountain Circle), thus converting the stretch between Bhashyam Circle and KR Circle near Majestic into a signal-free stretch, is finally on the verge of materialising.
Ready in two years
“We are all set to begin the project in August. It will be completed in two years,” said an official from major roads wing of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The Palike has already called for the prequalification bid (tender dated July 6)for the eight-lane corridor between Okalipuram junction and Fountain Circle.
It may be noted here that the state cabinet cleared this signal-free corridor project in January and had fixed the estimated cost at Rs115 crore. According to the plan, the corridor will have service roads on either sides. Also, 251 sq metres of private land and 12,818 sq metres of railway land would be acquired. The South Western Railway would also build a road underbridge, at an estimated cost of Rs28 crore.
“The first phase of the project, which has been taken up now, costs Rs62.5 crore,” said a BBMP official. The project has been a long-pending demand of the residents of West Bangalore. It is estimated that the passenger car per unit at Okalipuram junction varies from 1,000 to 15,000 per hour.
Once the project is implemented, residents of Vijayanagar and surrounding areas will also benefit, when it comes to connectivity.
