They are not town planners and must allow the system to work,'' he said. Reacting to green concerns, he said only 19 trees along this stretch will be axed for the Rs 8-crore project. "People's claims that 200-500 trees will be chopped for widening are rubbish. The tank too will not be touched.'' "Nearly 12,000 sqft of our land has been encroached upon.We are only using it,'' he added. The 1.2-km stretch is the second of five identified by BBMP for widening from Cauvery Junction to Yeshwantpur and will be made 27 metres wide in 18 months.
The initial proposal based on the revised master plan was to make it 30m. Irregular road width and high traffic density are some reasons cited for widening. The first one (Cauvery Junction to Bhashyam Circle) has been dropped as it's already 27m wide. The bigger plans also include a pass over from Vyalikaval to Sadashivanagar. "This will also involve widening work on service roads on either side but we'll take it up one by one'' he said.
