Light Rail Transit to Connect Bangalore Airport to City

The Light Rail Transit (LRT) system has scored over the monorail as the new urban commuting option for a network of 40 km in Bangalore city. The state government is looking to introduce newer public transport networks to decongest the city traffic. The Bangalore Airport Rail Link Limited (BARL),which is in charge of this project, chose the LRT system following the traffic and technology report submitted by technical consultancy firm Capita Symonds. LRT was chosen after comparing the two rail systems over 21 parameters, including capital & operating costs, passenger capacity, compatibility with other railway systems and future flexibility of these systems.LRT,as an urban transport system,is slightly slower and carries lesser number of passengers than the conventional railway or metro system, but plays an important role as a feeder route as it takes lesser space. However, the study, which looked into the traffic density and terrain of Bangalore, has also suggested for LRT as a metro network will not be technologically and economically feasible in all parts of the city. The consultancy will submit a detailed project report (DPR) soon. The average cost of installing a kilometer of LRT is estimated to be about.120-145 crore, taking the total project cost close to.6,000 crore. The ongoing metro rail will run up to 42.5 km with a likely extension by another 50 km.The LRT is proposed for 40 km.Besides, there will be a high speed rail link connecting Bangalore city and international airport for a distance of 33 km.
