A host of infrastructure projects will be on this year.
Road widening, underpass construction, flyovers to make the Outer Ring Road (ORR) seamless and the chugging of the Metro to new localities - these are some of the projects that will see continued progress this year.
To cope with the ever-increasing load on the roads and commuting hassles that the city has been experiencing, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP),Bangalore Development Authority (BDA),Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd,(BMRCL) and Bangalore Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (BMRDA) are in the process of the execution of various developmental works in and around the city.
Underpasses,flyovers
The BBMP has initiated the process of widening of roads and several major junctions. However,in view of the Transfer of Developmental Rights (TDR) and other issues, the proposal is yet to take off in a big way.The work on the underpasses has been slow in many important junctions. The Tagore Circle underpass has been under construction for some time now.
The new ones planned near the Okalipuram junction and below the Yeshwantpur flyover near the police station,as well as a fresh ramp and wider road from Tumkur Road side for smooth flow of traffic to Yeshwantpur, and the Sankey Road widening are just a few to name.
The Circle Maramma Temple junction will also get a new underpass to connect to the underpass under progress at the Prof C N R Rao Circle. The C N R Rao Road underpass will be a unique Y-shaped underpass.
To ease congestion on Okalipuram Main Road, the BBMP will build an eight-lane stretch from Magadi Road to Khoday's Circle. The project will be launched by January end.The proposed stretch will be signalfree.
The BDA is constructing flyovers all across the ORR to facilitate seamless flow of traffic. These are again at various stages of construction.
Intermediate Ring Road
The ORR will get a shot in the arm if all goes well with the BMRDA's plans to strengthen the ORR.The civic agency plans to take up two ORR and two Intermediate Ring Roads (IRRs).
There are plans to construct an 89-km ORR starting from Doddaballapur at Rs 1,110 crores, another ORR of 128 km from Attibele at Rs 1,600 crores,a 70-km IRR from Ramanagaram at Rs 875 crores and an IRR from Devanahalli at Rs 1,000 crores. These ring roads will cover Kanakapura, Ramanagaram, Magadi, Doddaballapur, Devanahalli, Hoskote, Anekal and Nelamangala in the Bangalore Metropolitan Region (BMR).
Metro Rail
With the cabinet approving two new lines - RV Road to Bommasandra and Gottigere-IIM-B to Nagavara, under Phase II of the Metro project, the reach of the Metro has widened. At least an additional 5-lakh commuters are expected to take these two new lines.
Under Reach 2,85 percent of the work has been completed on the Magadi Road to Mysore Road stretch. The underground work is in progress, but this will take some time.Phase I and II after completion in 2016-17 are expected to carry 15 lakh commuters.
The extension up to Whitefield,Kengeri,Manjunathanagar and the Anjanapura Township will facilitate realty development in the vicinity.
