The Mass Transit System in Bengaluru is all set to change, if all the proposals that the state government is considering is anything to go by. The current (and long-pending) proposals are mostly in line with the Comprehensive Traffic and Transportation Plan (CTTP) 2007 drawn by RITES rather than the ABIDe Transportation Plan submitted to the government in 2009.
The CTTP 2007 recommended a combination of Metro, Monorail/Light Rail Transit (LRT), Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) and Commuter Rail system for a mass transport system in the city while the ABIDe plan is based only on Metro rail and bus system and rules out the need for another system. Projects based on all the systems suggested under the CTTP are currently either being implemented or on the drawing board. By the year 2015, the Metro rail will cover over 111 km under phases I and II with 42.3 km under implementation in Phase I. An LRT proposal is under consideration for two corridors covering 40 km. A BRT system from Hebbal to Silk Board has been cleared while a commuter rail proposal is under consideration though without making much headway.
Apart from this, a monorail line between Agara and Majestic (15.9 km) is being considered too, which is part of the 60 km line proposed by Scomi Geodesic as a Swiss challenge proposal. As the government awaits a commitment letter and response to technical and Financial Qualification criteria from Geodesic, a crucial meeting on monorail link between Agara and Majestic is expected to be held this week.
