A six-lane road connecting Hennur Junction and the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA), which has been lying unused despite having been completed about 10 months ago, might get a new lease of life.
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which has developed the road at a cost of `45 crore, has said that it would revive talks with the airport authorities to ensure that the road is utilised to connect Bangalore East and the airport.
BBMP standing committee (major works) had held meetings with BIA officials in January and directed them to bring down its boundary wall on its eastern side to allow the six-lane road, running from Hennur Junction to Mylanahalli on BIA's east, to pass.
However, BIA had said that it was reluctant to allow this connecting road as it would criss-cross the airport's second runway which is expected to come up by 2014.
Also, it would need the approval of directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA). BBMP deputy mayor S Harish said that the BBMP would put forth suggestions, when they meet the airport officials, which include constructing an underpass along the proposed second runway.
He said that constructing underpass along runways was a common feature in many international airports and that the same could be applied at BIA as well.
He added that a detailed project report for the BBMP's proposal would be presented when they meet the airport authorities later this month.
If the BBMP has its way, Bangaloreans staying or working in KR Puram, Banaswadi, Indiranagar, Whitefield, ITPL and other areas of Bangalore East can save 10 km to reach the BIA.
The proposed road, which connects to the airport, commences at Hennur and cuts through Bagalur, Kanoor, Chagalatha, Mylanahalli village.
