The Automated Tracking and Control of Green Assets (ATCAG) bicycle stands introduced in the city on a trial basis have received a huge response and are all set to multiply into 70 next year. Under the pilot scheme three ATCAGs have been set up at the park adjacent to the War Memorial on FM Cariappa road, in the Utility Building complex in front of Fame Shankar Nag theatre and at the Anil Kumble Circle with six bicycles in each of the stands.
The response has been better than expected. “By October 22 we had 100 registered users and now have 160 of them. We started with physical registrations but are open to accepting them online too seeing the demand,” says chairman of Kerberon Automations, Syed Haseeb Arfat, adding that 70 more stands with 12 bicycles each will be set up across the city after January. “The plan is to have bicycle stands every half a kilometer. The first phase of the project will cover the Central Business District (CBD) and Jayanagar,” he adds. While the facility is free of cost in the pilot phase, once it becomes regular users will have to pay an annual registration fee of Rs.500. The stands which are currently open between 9 am and 5 pm. will work longer hours after January and those taking a bicycle from one stand will be allowed to return it another once the facility becomes fully functional in the city. The BBMP is providing the land and the Directorate of Urban Land and Transport (DULT) is deciding on the locations of the stands.
